RV Water Pump Troubleshooting

Image result for RV Water Pump

The Water pump is a simple device- an electric motor turns an impeller to force water through the pipe system, there is usually a filter device to prevent big objects from damaging the internal workings of the pump, a sensor to monitor the pressure amount, and control the automatic start of the pump and an inline fuse somewhere between the pump and the 12v power source.

A water pump usually fails because of its poor construction; something has been sucked into the pump that causes damage or an electrical connection problem.

If the pump is heard to be working but you have little or no water or you know your pump is supposed to be on but no results, odds are there is a problem with the pump itself.

First, check the pump unit- is usually located inside the RV under a counter, somewhere with access.

Is there water underneath the unit? Vibrating excessively? Noisy? Are electrical connections hooked up? If any of these exist, the pump will either have to be repaired or replaced.

It should be a simple matter to remove the pump unit from the RV- the following steps should allow you to remove most pumps.

Needed tools: pliers, screwdriver (Philips and/or flat head), combination wrench, maybe a socket set, rags (soak up water)

  1. Disconnect power to the unit (disconnect battery)
  2. Remove electrical connections, perhaps marking and labeling them
  3. Unbolt pump (usually held by 4 bolts)
  4. Disconnect hose or pipe fittings

Look for obvious cracks, loose water pipe connections, frayed electrical leads, and clogged filter screens.

If fixing any of these is not the obvious solution, either an overhaul of the pump or outright replacement will be needed.

If replacing the unit, most RV stores or online suppliers should have a model for your specific RV, perhaps made better than the original.

Just install in the reverse order of removal.

If you are going to tear into the pump yourself make sure you have a clean working area, and a repair kit for your particular model pump could be very handy (includes gaskets, o rings, new filter screens, etc.)
If you suspect electrical problems, a multimeter could be very handy, if not essential.

Before you attempt any repairs you are not familiar with, acclimate yourself with the basics of electrics, internal pump workings, and how to use your tools properly- you will save yourself some real sweat and grief.
Some specific things can be done in advance to ensure your pump works properly.

Always winterize your water system, by draining tanks, using RV Water antifreeze, and following the manufacturer's instructions.

Before using your RV for the first time and after extended storage, make sure you are familiar with all the water systems and how they operate- check for leaks, smelly water that could be a sign of contaminated pipes, and that everything turns on when it is supposed to.

Look for vibrations with your pump (if your pump makes excessive vibration noises, unbolt your pump and put a computer mouse pad under it, and bolt the unit back down- it works.)

RV Water Replacement

Replace Your Sump  In 5 Steps:

  • Unplug The RV  Water Pump

Locate where you would like to disconnect the water pump from the drain line.

To remove the water pump, you will need to either un-clamp the pump or unscrew it from the drain line.

Loosen the clamps that fasten the check valve to the discharge pipe and then remove the valve.

Connect the pit lid up over the discharge pipe where the check valve was, and set it aside.

Then, grab the discharge pipes disconnect them off the pit, and pull out the pump.

Set it aside and allow the water to drain out of it for a few moments.

Check to see if there is any piping or fittings that are between the water outlet opening and where the pump is connected to the drain line. If there’s, remove and put it aside to connect later to the new pump.

If you’ve got a solid discharge pump, saw through it to get it out.

Later you might use rubber pipe joiners to restore the connection.

  • Take the pump with you to your local plumbing supply store

{or hardware store}

And allow them to assist you to select a replacement pump that is equivalent to the power source and same drain-line hookups and plumbing capabilities as your old pump.

  • Install Your New Water Pump

Before getting started, be sure you have all the tools that you may need.

  1. Some of these tools may include:
  2. Tape Measure
  3. Pipe Wrench
  4. Phillips and Flat Head Screwdrivers
  5. Hand Saw
  6. Up to 5 feet of PVC Pipe
  7. The Appropriate PVC Connectors and Adhesive
  8. Hose Clamps

Check Valve (this allows water to be pumped out but keeps it from flowing back in)

The instructions that follow are for submersible water pumps. Submersible sump pumps have three connections. The first connection is the electrical connection, which is a 3-wire plug that connects to an outlet at a minimum of four feet above ground level.

The outlet must be a ground fault interrupt that’s correctly rated for the amperage of the pump motor.

The second connection is a 1/4-inch plastic fitting at the base. This should have a backflow check valve installed that prevents the flowing back of water into the sump pit after it has been drained.

The hose or pipe that connects the pump to the drain line is the third and final connection.

Be sure to inspect the pipe carefully for pinholes before reusing it just in case it needs to be replaced.

Use a wet vacuum to wash out the bottom of the water pump pit, then inspect the pit for any damage it may have. If all looks good, then you’re ready to install your new pump.

Unpack your new water pump along with any packaging that may be holding wires and floats.

If you're replacing the pipe, you’ve got to measure; mark, and cut another new piece of PVC to the right parameters from the new pump to reach up to securely connect the check valve.

Move the pump into position directly under the new piece of PVC into the check valve then fasten it tightly.

If your pump uses a float switch, make sure it can freely travel in the water pump basin.

Once you have the pump installed, then you can test it out by plugging it into the outlet and pouring water into the pit.

The pump should kick on when the float reaches the preset level or immediately if, in case you're using a diaphragm switch instead of afloat.

The water will drain completely in a short period if your pump is installed correctly.

Congratulations! You have saved yourself a large amount of money.

You can always refer to the manufacturer's manual or you can ask for help from your local hardware store experts for clarity.

Summary

Though water is an essential part of RVing's adventures, water pumps are not the most exciting thing to talk about.  However, the advances made in this RV water pump are exciting to the person that has camped in a travel trailer. They know the frustration that comes with continual cycling and excessive noise.

That’s the main reason for an RV water pump as it will supply water for the shower, sink, toilet, and other amenities. We hope the above review will give you a better insight when you go shopping for your RV water pump.
